California Stargazers Set for Rare Pre-Dawn ‘Planet Parade’ and Lunar Alignment
Watch the moon align with Mars, Saturn, and Uranus in a rare ‘planet parade’ over California this weekend. Best viewing tips and dark sky locations included.

A Cosmic Gathering in the Morning Sky
Skywatchers across California and the United States are preparing for a spectacular celestial event this weekend as the moon aligns with three planets in what astronomers often call a “planet parade.” On the mornings of Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, the moon will share the sky with Mars, Saturn, and Uranus, offering a rare opportunity to see multiple neighbors of our solar system in a single frame.
While the term “planet parade” is not an official scientific designation, it describes the visual phenomenon where planets appear to march in a straight line across the ecliptic—the flat, disc-shaped plane of our solar system. This alignment provides a unique perspective of our orbital neighborhood from our vantage point on Earth.
What to Look For and How to See It
The celestial show will begin in the eastern sky just before sunrise. The moon will be in its waning crescent phase, meaning it will appear as a thin, delicate sliver. This is ideal for stargazers because the moon’s reduced brightness ensures it won’t wash out the nearby planets. Mars will be identifiable as a distinct reddish point of light, while Saturn will appear as a steady, bright glow nearby.
While Mars and Saturn are easily visible to the naked eye, seeing Uranus will require a telescope. Despite being the third-largest planet in our solar system, its immense distance makes it too faint for typical unaided viewing. NASA experts suggest that while optical aids like binoculars or telescopes will certainly enhance the experience, the primary alignment remains a striking sight for anyone with a clear view of the horizon.
Finding the Best View in California
For those seeking the clearest views, escaping urban light pollution is essential. California is home to several premier “Dark Sky” locations designated by DarkSky International. Experts recommend Joshua Tree National Park, particularly the eastern wilderness areas, or Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for pristine conditions. Other top spots include the mountain village of Julian and Death Valley National Park, where the desert floor offers some of the darkest skies in the southwestern United States.
Whether you are a seasoned astronomer or a casual observer, this weekend’s alignment offers a moment of quiet wonder. To catch the display, aim to be outside at least 45 minutes before dawn to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
