Late Power-Play Goal Caps Thrilling Comeback as Canucks Snap 10-Game Winless Streak
Filip Hronek scored in overtime as the Vancouver Canucks erased a late deficit to beat the Anaheim Ducks 6-5 and snap a 10-game winless streak.
Vancouver Erases Multi-Goal Deficit in Final Minutes
Filip Hronek scored with 10.4 seconds remaining in overtime during a two-man advantage, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday at Honda Center.
The victory halted a 10-game winless slide for Vancouver (3-10-1). Trailing 5-2 midway through the third period, the Canucks launched a late rally, pulling goaltender Leevi Merilainen for an extra attacker to score twice in under a minute. Jonathan Lekkerimaki brought the Canucks within one at 17:14 before netting his second goal of the night at 18:03 to force overtime.
Early Struggles Turn to Overtime Triumph
Anaheim (5-6-1) built an early lead, starting with an opening-period tally from A.J. Greer that deflected off Hronek’s stick. After Liam Öhgren leveled the game early in the second period for Vancouver, the Ducks responded with three consecutive goals from Jeff Malott, Bennett Sennecke, and Leo Carlsson to build a 4-1 advantage.
Brock Boeser cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third period before Greer added his second goal for Anaheim. Just 31 seconds later, Jamie Oleksiak responded for Vancouver, setting up Lekkerimaki’s late game-tying effort.
In the extra period, penalties against Sennecke and Alex Killorn gave Vancouver a 5-on-3 power play, setting up Hronek’s game-winner from the left circle. Merilainen secured the win with 18 saves on 23 shots, while Anaheim netminder Lukas Dostal stopped 27 of 32 shots in the loss.
