A Fresh Chapter for the BC Greens

The Green Party of British Columbia is entering a pivotal phase as it embarks on its leadership race to succeed Sonia Furstenau, who announced her resignation earlier this year after serving as party leader since 2020. The leadership contest, running from September 13 to 23, 2025, promises to define the direction of the party as it seeks to reenergize its base following a challenging election outcome in 2024. Interim leader Jeremy Valeriote, appointed in late January, is steering the party through this transitional period.

Membership engagement has been a significant focus ahead of the vote. The BC Greens have added approximately 1,500 new members recently, bringing total membership to around 8,000, though leadership organizers emphasize the importance of verifying these new enrollments. This growth reflects heightened interest in shaping the party’s leadership and future strategy, even as leadership hopefuls prepare for planned town halls, debates, and virtual events in the coming weeks.

At the heart of the contest are three candidates, each representing different experiences and generational outlooks: Jonathan Kerr, a seasoned community leader and family physician; Emily Lowan, a youthful climate justice organizer; and Adam Bremner‑Akins, a student and party insider with roots in grassroots campaigning. Their platforms are expected to offer distinct visions, whether around affordability, environmental activism, or institutional renewal. The party—and perhaps the broader progressive movement in BC—awaits the result on September 24, when a new leader will be ushered in.
