B.C. Moves to Tackle Extortion Threats in South Asian Communities

The B.C. government has announced new initiatives to combat a rise in extortion threats targeting South Asian residents and business owners, particularly in Surrey and nearby cities. Public Safety officials, alongside RCMP and Crime Stoppers, outlined a plan that includes awareness campaigns, a dedicated tip line, and enhanced rewards for information leading to convictions. The measures come after months of concern about a spike in threats and related violence in the region.

Surrey introduces $250K reward fund

Surrey has already taken a lead by creating a $250,000 reward fund for community members who provide information that results in successful prosecutions. Police currently have dozens of extortion-related investigations underway, with some cases linked to shootings. Authorities hope that by offering financial incentives and better protection for witnesses, more people will feel safe stepping forward to help disrupt criminal networks.

Community engagement and trust-building

The campaign also places emphasis on building trust through education and outreach, with materials tailored to language and cultural needs in South Asian communities. Officials stressed that extortion is not only a criminal justice issue but also a direct attack on the safety and cohesion of families and neighborhoods. By increasing awareness and engagement, they hope to reduce under-reporting and ensure residents feel supported in rejecting these threats.
