BC Lions Hold Off Toronto Argonauts Behind Sean Whyte’s Record Eight Field Goals
Sean Whyte kicks a club-record eight field goals as the B.C. Lions defeat the Toronto Argonauts 24-17 after a dramatic late goal-line stand at BMO Field.
Whyte Sets Club Mark in Thrilling Road Victory
Sean Whyte booted a franchise-record eight field goals on Saturday afternoon, leading the B.C. Lions to a 24-17 victory against the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field. The win marks B.C.’s third consecutive victory and seventh in eight games, solidifying their position for second place in the West Division.
Whyte surpassed the previous club record he co-held with Lui Passaglia. Edmonton’s Vincent Blanchard holds the CFL single-game record with nine field goals, set on Sept. 26. The loss ended Toronto’s four-game winning streak and marked their first defeat at home in five games.
Late Goal-Line Stand Preserves B.C. Victory
Toronto had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but B.C.’s defence halted Toronto quarterback Nick Arbuckle twice at the one-yard line, including a final stop with 11 seconds left on the clock. T.J. Lee also intercepted Arbuckle at the Lions’ 11-yard line with 2:38 remaining to choke off a separate drive.
Arbuckle finished the afternoon completing 27 of 33 passes for 292 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. B.C. starter Nathan Rourke completed 15 of 32 pass attempts for 254 yards in front of 13,974 fans.
How the Scoring Unfolded
Whyte opened the game with a 39-yard field goal, followed by connections from 26 and 32 yards out. Toronto responded with a five-yard touchdown catch by Makai Polk to take a 10-9 lead late in the second quarter. However, a 12-yard kick by Whyte with one second left on the clock sent B.C. into halftime with a 12-10 advantage.
In the second half, Whyte added field goals from 19, 40, and 29 yards out before Arbuckle connected with David Ungerer on a 36-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 21-17. Whyte capped the scoring with his eighth field goal to secure the final seven-point margin.

Remembering Lyle Odelein: Former Montreal Defenceman and Stanley Cup Winner Dies at Age 58
Former Montreal Canadiens defenceman and 1993 Stanley Cup champion Lyle Odelein has died at age 58. Read tributes from Montreal, Columbus, and Pittsburgh.
Lyle Odelein Passes Away at 58
Former NHL defenceman Lyle Odelein, who helped the Montreal Canadiens win a Stanley Cup championship in 1993, has died at the age of 58. The Montreal Canadiens released a statement Saturday confirming his death on Friday.
According to a report published Saturday by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Odelein died of a heart attack. A resident of the Pittsburgh region, he ended his 16-season NHL career while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2005-06 season.
A Memorable NHL Career
Hailing from Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein entered the league as a seventh-round draft selection by Montreal in 1986. Between 1990 and 1996, he made 420 appearances with the Canadiens, accumulating 20 goals, 75 assists, and 1,357 penalty minutes. He recorded the most penalty minutes on the team in every one of those six seasons, placing him second overall in Canadiens franchise history.
Over the course of his career, Odelein logged 1,056 NHL games across seven franchises: Montreal, New Jersey, Phoenix, Columbus, Chicago, Dallas, and Pittsburgh. In 2000, he was named the inaugural captain of the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets.
Tributes From Across the League
Statements mourning Odelein’s passing were shared by several of his former teams on Saturday.
“The entire Canadiens organization is saddened to learn of the passing of Lyle Odelein, who passed away Friday at the age of 58,” the Montreal Canadiens stated. “The organization wishes to offer its most sincere condolences to Lyle Odelein’s family, friends and close ones.”
The Columbus Blue Jackets paid tribute on X, highlighting his role in their franchise history: “Lyle is a significant part of our history, serving as our first captain and helping us celebrate our 25th season in March. He left an indelible mark on our organization and on our community. On the ice, Lyle was a fierce competitor and a Stanley Cup champion. Off the ice, he was warm, kind and quick with a smile and a kind word. He was a friend to all who knew him and will be sorely missed.”
The Pittsburgh Penguins also honored their former player in social media posts, writing: “Lyle was known for his tough exterior on the ice, but we will always remember his generous heart and enormous laugh.”

Nick Arbuckle Takes the Field on His Birthday as Toronto Argos Host B.C. Lions
Nick Arbuckle will start at quarterback for the Toronto Argonauts against the B.C. Lions on Saturday with Chad Kelly sidelined due to a hand injury.
Argonauts Turn to Arbuckle for Saturday Matchup
With starting quarterback Chad Kelly sidelined by a right hand injury, Nick Arbuckle will step in under centre for the Toronto Argonauts when they host the B.C. Lions at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon. The game falls precisely on Arbuckle’s 33rd birthday, marking the second consecutive year he has started on his birthday at Exhibition Place. His outing on the same date last year ended early due to a season-ending shoulder injury during a loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“It’s cool that my last start … was Oct. 4 here on my birthday,” Arbuckle noted on Friday. “Three-hundred and sixty-four days later, we’re back. Not the same result, but it’s cool one year apart from the last start to the first start this season.”
Offensive Continuity and Quarterback History
Kelly had started every game this season for Toronto (9-6), leading the CFL with 5,067 passing yards, 33 touchdown passes, and 24 interceptions. Toronto head coach Mike Miller expressed full confidence in the transition, stating that the offence will maintain its standard pace because players regularly practice the system, with only minor play adjustments based on Arbuckle’s preferences.
Arbuckle brings plenty of experience, now in his ninth CFL season and third stint with Toronto. Across 40 career CFL starts, he notably filled in for Kelly during the 2024 East Division final victory over Montreal, before earning MVP honors in Toronto’s 41-24 Grey Cup triumph against Winnipeg. He also played in relief of Kelly during Toronto’s 26-12 victory over B.C. on Aug. 23, completing 13 of 20 passes for 134 yards and adding 28 rushing yards.
Lions Challenge and Playoff Positioning
Unlike their previous meeting, the B.C. Lions (8-6) will have starting quarterback Nathan Rourke available. Arbuckle noted that facing B.C. defensive co-ordinator Mike Benevides presents a tough challenge due to his scheme-heavy approach. “He always comes out with a new wrinkle, new blitzes, new coverages almost every week and he’s very game-play centric for the offence he’s facing,” Arbuckle said, adding that players must be prepared for unpracticed look on the field.
Toronto has already secured a home playoff berth and aims to extend a four-game winning streak while maintaining an undefeated 4-0 mark at home. Meanwhile, B.C. enters the contest having secured victories in seven of its past eight games, currently holding second place in the West Division ahead of Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, and Calgary.

Maple Leafs Claim First Victory of 2026-27 Campaign
The Toronto Maple Leafs rebounded from a season-opening loss to defeat the New York Islanders 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto improved its record to 1-1-0 following a 3-2 defeat against Montreal the previous night, while New York opened its season at 0-1-0.
Early Scoring Drives Toronto Ahead
Despite New York controlling the play early with fresh legs, Toronto took the initial lead at 7:14 of the opening frame when Colton Sissons tipped in a pass from Nick Paul for his first goal with the Maple Leafs. Later in the period, Morgan Rielly kept the puck inside the blue line and passed to Jack Roslovic, whose shot generated a rebound that Easton Cowan converted on the power play at 11:55.
Stolarz Stands Tall in Net
Anthony Stolarz turned aside 26 shots to earn the victory for Toronto, including a key right-pad save against Anthony Duclair in the final period. Stolarz, who played just 26 games last year due to injuries, held the Islanders scoreless until Emil Heineman netted a short-handed goal with 5:51 remaining in regulation. Ilya Sorokin finished with 24 saves for New York in the loss.
Statlines and Upcoming Schedule
Cowan, who produced two points on the night, previously recorded 18 points in 22 postseason games during the Toronto Marlies’ Calder Cup championship run last spring. On the Islanders’ side, teenage defenceman Matthew Schaefer remains two goals away from passing Bobby Orr for the second-highest goal total by a teenage blueliner in league history. Toronto continues its home stay on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.
