The West Coast Current is a local news publication operated by The Current. These terms cover using this
site, leaving comments, and sending us stories, photographs, and tips. They sit alongside our
privacy policy, which covers what we do with personal
information.
We are a small newsroom. The short version is this: what you send us stays yours, you are
giving us permission to publish it across The Currents, and you can withdraw that permission for
anything we have not published yet.
Who we are and how to reach us
The Current, publisher of The West Coast Current at https://westcoastcurrent.ca.
The Current also publishes The Miramichi Current, The Thompson Current, The West Coast Current,
and The Okanagan Current. We refer to these together as The Currents, and we may
add other local papers to that group.
Questions or complaints about these terms, about a comment, or about something you sent us go to
newsdesk@mycurrent.ca or through our
contact page.
Reading the site
You are welcome to read, link to, quote briefly from, and share our work. What you may not do is
republish whole articles, copy the site wholesale, scrape it automatically, or use our work to train
a machine-learning model without asking us first.
The articles, photographs, and design on this site belong to The Current or to the people we
licensed them from. Quoting a passage with a credit and a link is normal and welcome. Reproducing a
full story is not.
Comments
Comments are open on most articles because local news is worth arguing about. We moderate them,
and we would rather say plainly what gets removed than leave it to judgement on the day.
We remove a comment if it:
- attacks a person rather than an argument, or is abusive, threatening, or harassing;
- attacks a group of people on the basis of race, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation,
disability, or origin; - states something as fact about a named person or business that could damage them and that we
have no reason to believe is true; - publishes someone’s private information — an address, a phone number, a workplace —
without their agreement; - is an advertisement, a scam, or repeated off-topic posting;
- is written under a false identity intended to deceive, or is one of several accounts run by the
same person in the same discussion; or - would put us in breach of a publication ban or a court order.
We do not remove a comment for disagreeing with us, for criticising our reporting, or for being
rude about a public figure’s public conduct.
We can remove a comment, close comments on an article, or block an account. We are not obliged to
publish every comment, and a comment being visible does not mean we agree with it or have checked
it. If your comment was removed and you think we got it wrong, write to us and say so.
Sending us stories, photographs, and tips
Our contact page invites you to send us news, and readers often send photographs of things they
saw before we could get there. This section is what you are agreeing to when you do.
What you are giving us permission to do
You keep the copyright in whatever you send us. It stays yours. You are giving us a
non-exclusive licence — permission that does not stop you doing anything else
with it, including selling it to somebody else — to:
- publish it in The West Coast Current and in any of The Currents;
- edit it for length, clarity, and accuracy, and crop or colour-correct a photograph, without
changing what it shows or what it means; - keep it in our archive; and
- use it to promote the story it belongs to, on our own site, newsletter, and social accounts.
What we will not do
- We will not license, sell, or syndicate what you send us to any other publisher, wire service,
or partner. The permission above covers The Currents and nothing beyond them. - We will not use it to advertise a product or a business.
- We will not present it as our own work.
- We will not alter a photograph so that it shows something that did not happen.
Crediting you
We will normally credit you by name, and we would rather do that than not. We are not promising
it in every case: space, layout, and the practicalities of a small newsroom sometimes get in the
way, so we are not going to write a guarantee here that we cannot always keep.
If you would rather not be named at all, tell us when you send it and we will not name you.
It has to be yours to give
By sending it, you are telling us that you took the photograph or wrote the words yourself, or
that you have the right to give us this permission. If it shows a person in a private setting, that
you have their agreement. And that publishing it will not break a court order or a publication ban
you are aware of.
If that turns out not to be so, tell us as soon as you can. We would far rather take something
down early than defend it later.
Changing your mind
You can withdraw your permission at any time by writing to
newsdesk@mycurrent.ca. From then on we will not publish
it again or use it in anything new.
What we have already published stays published. A news archive that can be quietly edited after
the fact is not a record, and we are not willing to keep one that can be. If something we published
is wrong, unfair, or unsafe for you, that is a different matter and a real one — write to us
and we will look at it properly. See the next section.
If something we published is wrong
Tell us. Write to newsdesk@mycurrent.ca with the story
and what is wrong with it.
We correct factual errors, and we say on the story that we have corrected it rather than changing
it silently. If the problem is that publishing something puts you at risk, say so plainly and we
will treat it urgently.
Requests about your personal information — seeing what we hold, correcting it, or
asking us to delete it — are covered by our
privacy policy, which explains how to make one and how
long we take.
The usual caveats
We report as carefully as we can, and we are not infallible. Nothing here is legal, financial, or
medical advice, and a story about a business is not a recommendation to use it. We link to other
sites where it is useful; we do not control them and are not responsible for what is on them.
We try to keep the site up and occasionally it will not be.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms we will change the date at the top. If we change something that affects
what you have already sent us, the version in force when you sent it is the one that applies to it.
These terms are governed by the law of the province in which the paper you are reading is
published, and by the laws of Canada.
