Why Sea to Sky Residents Need to Secure Food and Pumpkins Before Halloween
BC Conservation officers urge Sea to Sky residents to secure food attractants and pumpkins as poor berry crops drive increased bear activity in Whistler.
Increased Conflicts and Early Foraging
Sea to Sky residents face an uptick in bear conflicts as autumn begins, prompting conservation officials to urge extreme caution with food attractants, particularly Halloween pumpkins. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) reported a significant rise in bear activity around Whistler, detailing incidents where animals broke into garages and sheds or attempted to enter vehicles and homes for food. BCCOS officers and RCMP officers have also responded to multiple bear sightings inside Whistler Village.
A poor alpine berry crop caused by stifled spring and summer growth is driving both black bears and grizzlies to forage further into urban areas. Erica Van Loon, communications coordinator for the Coast to Cascades Grizzly Bear Initiative, noted that bears were feeding on unripe fruit trees by mid-to-late August in Pemberton Meadows—a behavior usually expected in early October. She observed shriveled, unproductive huckleberry bushes in the alpine during summer hikes, noting that bears require approximately 20,000 calories daily to prepare for hibernation.
Hibernation Timelines and Safety Guidelines
While bears typically enter hibernation by mid-November, Van Loon indicated that mild weather, food scarcity, and salmon run conditions could delay hibernation by a month or more, a timeline that a mild El Niño season may further extend. Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to keep dogs leashed, carry bear spray, make noise, avoid blooming berry patches, and avoid distractions like mobile phones or earbuds.
For Halloween, BCCOS spokesperson Nigel McInnis advised against leaving pumpkins outside until the night of October 31, recommending they be brought indoors at night before proper disposal. BCCOS urges residents to lock doors and windows, clean barbecues, secure garbage and compost, wash bins, and remove bird feeders and vehicle food. If a bear encounter occurs, provincial guidelines state people should stay calm, avoid running, climbing trees, screaming, or making eye contact, and back away slowly while speaking quietly. Threatening or aggressive bears should be reported to 1-877-952-7277.
