Why the B.C. Lions Must Stay Focused After Winning Big Over Saskatchewan
Nathan Rourke threw for 355 yards as the B.C. Lions beat Saskatchewan 30-16. B.C. now turns its attention to an upcoming road matchup in Ottawa.
Defensive Turnovers and Late Scores Push Lions Past Roughriders
The B.C. Lions secured a 30-16 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Place on Sunday, propelled by crucial defensive takeaways and key offensive drives. B.C.’s defence, which entered the contest with a league-lowest nine turnovers on the year, generated four against Saskatchewan. TJ Lee and Stanley Thomas-Oliver each recorded interceptions, while Deontai Williams forced and recovered a fumble, and another turnover was collected on downs. Thomas-Oliver noted during the post-game show that the defensive unit played with significantly heightened confidence.
Saskatchewan saw two potential game-tying touchdowns nullified by penalties while trailing 13-6. Capitalizing on the second negated score, B.C. receiver Keon Hatcher caught a touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 20-6. Wideout Jevon Cottoy notched his second 100-yard game in three weeks, catching six passes for 110 yards. Late in the second quarter, Cottoy hauled in a 23-yard touchdown strike from Nathan Rourke before running to the stands to hand the ball to his mother, Valerie, who was attending her first game at BC Place after traveling from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Rourke Reaches Franchise Milestone Ahead of Ottawa Road Trip
Quarterback Nathan Rourke completed 22 of 28 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns to earn CFL Player of the Week honors. Despite the recognition, Rourke expressed dissatisfaction with his outing. “I don’t think I played the way I know I’m capable of playing,” he said after the game. The performance elevated Rourke to fifth on the Lions’ all-time passing list with 13,603 yards, surpassing Dave Dickenson.
Looking ahead, the Lions travel to face the winless Ottawa Redblacks (0-10) on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. B.C. enters as a 6.5-point favourite, but risks falling into a trap game if the squad looks past Ottawa toward their Sept. 4 road game against the Montreal Alouettes. Following Sunday’s contest, the team plans to remain in Ottawa for the week before heading to Montreal.
